This beautiful photo-book was published in collaboration with Alejandro Acin of IC Visual Lab, with full colour portraits of the Windrush Elders in Bristol, taken by photographer Garfield McKenzie, together with stories and reminiscences collected by Wendy Leocque. The book was produced and published as part of a Windrush Community Project funded through a Windrush Grant in 2021 to celebrate and commemorate the extraordinary lives and experiences of the generation arriving from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971 who made their homes in Bristol.

 

The Pioneers portraits have been exhibited at Bristol Central Library, St Pauls Learning Centre, at DAC Beechcroft Offices in Bristol, and at Bristol Folk House. ​Free copies of the book were distributed to several Bristol schools, libraries, local community groups and projects, and St Pauls residents, as well as the Windrush Elders who who are featured in the book.
